Specialty Farms Overview and Mission

Specialty Farms mission is to help prevent cancer-the second leading cause of death in the U.S.-by providing produce that tastes good while reducing the free radicals that cause most cancers.   This is being accomplished by a regular diet of our antioxidant-rich foods that create an “army” of antioxidants, ready to neutralize free radicals over a period of time.

Our focus on food that protects against cancer began in 1997 with our affiliation with Brassica Protection Products, started by Dr. Paul Talalay who is Director of the Laboratory for Molecular Pharmacology at Johns Hopkins. See “A Nibble of Prevention” from Johns Hopkins magazine. In 1992, Dr. Talalay along with Johns Hopkins plant physiology researcher Dr. Jed Fahey discovered the health-promoting properties of sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS), the cancer-fighting natural chemical found in the Brassica (cruciferous) family of vegetables led by broccoli.  The lab’s findings were announced on the front page of the New York Times and hailed as one of the top 100 scientific discoveries of the 20th century by Popular Mechanics.

Because of our learning from this affiliation that we as individuals can help prevent cancer by eating the right foods, we expanded our product lineup to a broad variety of tasty, antioxidant rich foods.

Our facility is an organically certified indoor farm in Bridgeport, CT, that produces and packages a range of sprouts, Wheat Grass, Endive, Shallots, dried fruits and dried mushrooms.
